German FA slams Otele with two-game ban

The German Football Association has rejected Hamburg SV’s appeal and confirmed a two-match suspension for winger Philip Otele following his sending off in the North derby defeat to Werder Bremen, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

In a ruling announced on Tuesday, the DFB upheld the original decision, meaning Otele will miss league fixtures against Hoffenheim on April 25 and Eintracht Frankfurt on May 2.

The governing body cited “rough play against an opponent” as the basis for the sanction, with the sports court maintaining its stance despite a review hearing requested by HSV.

Hamburg had hoped to have the punishment reduced, with questions raised internally over its severity.

Referee Florian Exner had already described the decision as harsh in the aftermath of the 3-1 defeat to Werder Bremen.

Hamburg managing director Eric Huwer also criticised what he viewed as inconsistencies in officiating standards, arguing that similar incidents had previously been interpreted differently in other matches.

“When it comes to the red card against Otele, suddenly there is talk of a point of impact, which we were not allowed to use again in Freiburg in the duel between Torunarigha and Manzambi because it was supposedly a football-typical movement,” Huwer said.

“At the end of the day, these are many terminological discrepancies that we do not agree with,” he added.

Despite Hamburg’s objections, the DFB did not alter its position, and the appeal process ultimately failed to change the outcome.

The federation’s statement made no reference to Hamburg’s challenge, instead focusing on the disciplinary ruling itself.

The fallout from the derby also extended beyond Otele, with assistant coach Loic Fave and physiotherapist Tim Roussis each handed a one-match touchline ban after being dismissed during the match. The DFB stated that both had “behaved unsportingly.”

Otele’s absence is a significant setback at a crucial stage of the season for Hamburg as head coach Merlin Polzin is already dealing with limited attacking options, with Jean-Luc Dompé sidelined by a foot injury and illness, while Alexander Røssing-Lelesiit remains out with a syndesmosis ligament injury.
