“Una dey vex like say I cancel Christmas?” — Peter Okoye blasts critics over birthday date change

Popular Nigerian music icon Peter Okoye has responded strongly to criticism over his decision to move his birthday celebration from November 18 to November 30, describing the backlash as unnecessary and overblown.

The singer, widely known as Mr P and formerly one-half of P-Square, had earlier announced that he would no longer mark or accept gifts on his original birthday. He maintained that the decision was purely personal.

Singer Questions Public Reaction

Reacting on Tuesday via X, Okoye expressed surprise at how his private choice had sparked widespread outrage. He questioned why many had taken offence over a decision that does not directly concern them.

In his words, “Una dey vex like say I cancel Christmas? Na my birthday date I move… no be your own, why e dey pain you? Even Jesus Christ December 25th date sef, people still dey debate am.”

Criticism of Priorities

The artist went further to criticise what he described as misplaced public attention. According to him, the reaction to his birthday shift appears disproportionate when compared with more serious national issues.

“Why cry more than the bereaved? Only in Nigeria, funny how my birthday date shift is causing more pain than Nigeria’s real problems

He concluded with a firm message directed at his critics: “Just for the record: Insult no dey reduce success. Who don make am, don make am! Know that and know peace.”

Background on P-Square Split

Okoye gained prominence alongside his twin brother, Paul Okoye, as part of P-Square, one of Nigeria’s most successful music duos in the 2000s and early 2010s.

However, the group faced internal conflicts, leading to their first major split in 2015 over management and royalty disagreements.

By 2017, they officially parted ways, with Peter continuing as Mr P while Paul performed under the name Rudeboy.

Although the brothers reunited in 2021 and resumed making music together, underlying tensions later resurfaced, resulting in renewed disputes over financial and managerial matters.
