Weak global diplomacy could worsen Africa’s economic, insecurity crisis – Experts

Experts have called for an urgent overhaul of global diplomacy, warning that weak multilateral cooperation could worsen rising insecurity, economic instability and governance challenges across Africa and other regions.

The call was made on Friday during a virtual event organised by the Diplomacy and Corporate Communications Conference to mark the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace.

The event, themed “Uniting for a Peaceful and Sustainable Future,” brought together diplomats, policymakers, media professionals and young leaders from different parts of the world.

The International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace, marked annually on April 24, was established by the United Nations to promote collective action and diplomacy in resolving global conflicts and advancing sustainable development. It highlights the need for countries to work together through dialogue, cooperation and respect for international law in addressing cross-border challenges such as insecurity, climate change and economic instability.

Speaking at the session, the Convener and Lead of DCCC, John Uche, said the growing wave of global challenges, including conflict, climate change and inequality, requires stronger cooperation among countries.

He stressed that diplomacy should be seen as a practical tool for solving problems rather than a sign of weakness.

“This global observance reminds us that in an increasingly interconnected world, no nation thrives in isolation. The challenges we face—conflict, climate change, economic inequality and social instability—demand coordinated, multilateral responses rooted in dialogue, mutual respect and strategic communication.

“The designation of April 24 by the United Nations is not merely symbolic. It is a call to action. It reinforces the need for nations, institutions and individuals to recommit to diplomacy, not as an abstract ideal, but as a practical tool for peacebuilding, sustainable development and global progress.

“However, as we reflect globally, we must also introspect locally,” he said.

He added that there is a need to rethink how multilateralism works in Africa, noting that lack of collaboration could slow progress in addressing insecurity and economic challenges.

“Across many parts of Africa and other developing regions, a critical gap persists; a gap in the understanding, appreciation and application of diplomacy and effective communication. Too often, diplomacy is misunderstood as weakness, and constructive dialogue is replaced with aggression, misinformation or silence,” he said.

Uche also emphasised the role of young people and non-state actors in shaping the future, noting that training and capacity-building are key to stronger cooperation and long-term development.

“This perception is not just a communication problem, it is a development problem. Because without diplomacy, there is no trust. Without trust, there is no collaboration.

“And without collaboration, sustainable progress will be a mere wish on paper. This is where our work becomes both relevant and urgent,” he added.

Also speaking, a former Head of the Department of History and Diplomatic Studies, University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Mfon Ekpo-Otu, said that in today’s interconnected world, where countries share common challenges and outcomes, the importance of multilateralism and collective leadership cannot be ignored.

He said the principles go beyond diplomacy and serve as a foundation for global survival and progress.

“In an era defined by interconnectivity, interconnected destinies and shared challenges, we cannot discountenance the principles of multilateralism and collaborative leadership. They are not just diplomatic tools, but the very foundation of our collective survival and progress on the planet.

“Multilateralism reminds us that no nation, however powerful, can thrive in isolation. It encourages countries to unite, share resources and coordinate efforts to tackle issues that cross borders,” he said.
