Wasila Coded reflects on daughter’s acting debut

Actress, Adebimpe Akintunde, popularly known as Wasila Coded, has opened up about her emotional reaction the first time she saw her daughter, Amida, whom she fondly calls Ashabi, make her on-screen debut.

Speaking in an interview with Sunday Scoop, she said, “It was deeply emotional for me. Watching her on screen, holding her own so confidently, I wasn’t just proud; I was moved. As someone who understands what happens behind the scenes, I could see the discipline, focus, and sacrifice reflected in her performance. I smiled, reflected, and silently thanked God. It felt like watching a dream take shape right before my eyes.”

Asked when she first discovered her daughter’s acting talent, she said, “As an actress, I understand what it takes to truly embody a character, so I don’t take talent lightly. I noticed her spark quite early, but there was a defining moment during one of her rehearsals at home for my latest movie, Tori Tie 3. She slipped into a character so effortlessly that it didn’t feel like acting anymore; it felt real. I remember watching her quietly, almost in disbelief. In that moment, I knew this was beyond play; it was purpose. What went through my mind was a mix of pride and responsibility because I understand both the beauty and the demands of this path.”

On how she balances pride in Amida’s performance with the instinct to still see her as her little girl, she added, “As an actress, I recognise talent. As a mother, I nurture destiny. Ashabi is not just acting; she is becoming. Watching her shine is beautiful, but raising her right is my true masterpiece. That balance is very important to me. No matter how brilliant Ashabi is on screen, at home she is still my child.

“Being in the industry myself helps me guide her with clarity. I understand the pressures, so I’m intentional about keeping her grounded while ensuring her education is not compromised. I celebrate her wins, but I also protect her childhood. I remind her that acting is what she does, not all that she is.”
