Sokoto hails Nigeria-Turkey military deal

Nigeria’s evolving war against insurgency and banditry may be entering a new phase, as the Sokoto State Government has backed a fresh international military partnership while calling for a shift toward smarter, intelligence-led operations.

The Office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters praised the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, for facilitating the training of 200 Nigerian Special Forces personnel in Turkey, describing it as a “forward-looking” response to complex security threats.

But beyond the numbers, the state government said the real significance of the deal lies in what it represents—a move away from conventional warfare toward precision-driven, unconventional tactics tailored to modern threats.

“Today’s security challenges are no longer defined by traditional battle lines. They require speed, intelligence, and specialised capabilities,” the statement read in parts.

According to the office, insurgent groups and bandits have increasingly adopted fluid, unpredictable strategies, making it imperative for Nigeria’s armed forces to respond with equally adaptive and highly skilled units.

The statement stressed that specialised training must go hand-in-hand with sustained investment in intelligence gathering, surveillance systems, and inter-agency coordination to produce meaningful results on the ground.

It also highlighted the need to strengthen institutional frameworks that can absorb and sustain such advanced training, pointing to the importance of structured elite units capable of deploying these skills effectively.

While commending the federal government’s effort, the Sokoto government warned that training alone can not win the war without proper strategy, coordination, and support systems.

It reaffirmed its commitment to national security efforts, expressing optimism that with a smarter approach—anchored on training, intelligence, and adaptability—Nigeria can gradually outmanoeuvre its security challenges and restore stability.
