Slain Delta musician Ogidi’s body awaiting autopsy, not missing – Police

The Delta State Police Command has responded to reports circulating on social media regarding the location of the body of a young man reportedly killed by police officers in Delta State, Oghenemine Ogidi.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, addressed the controversy following viral posts suggesting that the family had been denied access to the remains and the police “could not find” the body for burial.

Reacting to the claims, Edafe dismissed the rumours of a missing body as false.

In a post on his official X handle on Friday, he clarified that the remains of Ogidi are currently being held at a mortuary facility under the jurisdiction of the state.

“His body is at the mortuary, and the family have been told that whenever they want to see it, they will be allowed to,” he wrote.

Edafe noted that because the incident is a “case of suspected murder,” the police are legally bound to conduct a thorough forensic examination.

“It’s a case of suspected murder, so an autopsy is compulsory, and the family also agreed to this,” he added.

PUNCH reports that Ogidi, a 28-year-old musician, was fatally shot by a police officer in broad daylight in Effurun.

While the command confirmed that the officer involved in the shooting, ASP Nuhu Usman, has been arrested and transferred to the Force Headquarters for further disciplinary action, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved the immediate dismissal and subsequent criminal prosecution of the officers involved in Ogidi’s death.
