Field was born on November 6, 1946, in Pasadena, California, which is near Los Angeles. Her mother, Margaret Field (1922–2011), was an actress, and her father, Richard Dryden Field (1914–1993), was a pharmacist who served in the Army during World War II. Her family background includes English, Irish, and, on her father’s side, Italian ancestry from Sicily. Her brother, Richard Dryden Field Jr., is a physicist and academic. Field’s parents divorced in 1950. On January 21, 1952, in Tijuana, Mexico, her mother married Jock Mahoney, an actor and stuntman. In her 2018 memoir, Field said that Mahoney abused her throughout her childhood until she was 14.

As a teenager, Field went to Portola Middle School and Birmingham High School in Van Nuys, where she was a cheerleader. Her 1964 graduating class included financier Michael Milken and talent agent Michael Ovitz. Actress Cindy Williams was a year younger than Field.

Personal life

Field married Steven Craig in 1968. They separated in 1973 and divorced in 1975. They had two sons: Peter Craig, born in 1969, who is a novelist and screenwriter, and Eli Craig, born in 1972, who is an actor and director.

Field was in a relationship with Burt Reynolds from 1976 to 1980. During that time, they co-starred in four films: Smokey and the Bandit, Smokey and the Bandit II, The End, and Hooper. After their breakup in 1980, they dated on and off until they ended their relationship for good in 1982.

Field married Alan Greisman in 1984. They had one son, Sam, born in 1987. Field and Greisman divorced in 1994.

On October 29, 1988, Field and three family members were in a private plane at Aspen/Pitkin County Airport in Colorado. The plane, owned by Merv Griffin, lost power during takeoff and hit a parked aircraft. Everyone survived with only minor injuries.

In her memoir, Field shared that she experienced “severe depression” in her late teens. She said that acting classes helped her deal with “this urgency, this anxiety, this need to find something that was festering in me.”

Field was diagnosed with osteoporosis in 2005. After her diagnosis, she started the “Rally with Sally for Bone Health” campaign with support from Roche and GlaxoSmithKline. The next day, Fox explained by email that they censored Field’s speech, along with two other moments during the ceremony, because “some language during the live broadcast may have been considered inappropriate by some viewers. As a result, Fox’s broadcast standards executives determined it appropriate to drop sound and picture during those portions of the show.”

Field supports women’s rights. She has served on the board of Vital Voices Global Partnership, an international women’s organization, and has co-hosted the Global Leadership Awards six times. As a Democrat, Field supported Hillary Clinton’s campaign for the 2008 Democratic nomination and Kamala Harris’s 2024 presidential campaign.
