The event, themed “A Corper, A Child,” featured debate competitions, educational activities, food distribution and several giveaways aimed at promoting learning and confidence among the children from Best Grade Schools, Shining Stars Academy, Peculiar Citadel Schools, among others.

Ahead of the programme, the Local Government Inspector, Dr Disu Oluyemisi, charged corps members to extend the kindness once shown to them as children to others.

He noted that the programme was designed to encourage corps members to contribute meaningfully to their host communities while supporting children through education and social engagement.

“Someone must have squeezed N1,000 into your hand when you were also a child. What will it take for you to use it to impact the lives of these children?” he said.

He added, “Give to these children and pass it on.”

Disu also urged the pupils to see the programme as an inspiration for their future.“If you have not taken a lesson here today, take a lesson that you want to wear this uniform,” he said.

According to him, the gathering was not only about celebration but also about motivating the children towards education and national service.“Take a lesson that you want to be a corper,” he added.

The Lead Educator on Community Development Service, Bose Adegasoye, who represented the State Coordinator at the programme, commended the corps members for organising an initiative centred on children’s growth and education.

PUNCH previously reported that the NYSC scheme recently marked its 53rd anniversary, reaffirming its commitment to national development through community service, education and grassroots initiatives.

The scheme has, over the years, contributed to the education sector through the deployment of corps members to schools and literacy programs across host communities nationwide.
