Osimhen confident of Galatasaray’s Süper Lig triumph

Victor Osimhen remains confident that Galatasaray will retain the Süper Lig title this season despite seeing their coronation delayed following a disappointing 4-1 defeat to Samsunspor on Saturday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Cimbom had the opportunity to seal the title when they faced Samsunspor at the Samsun 19 Mayıs Stadyumu. After their victory over close rivals Fenerbahçe in the Istanbul derby last week, they were widely expected to overcome mid-table opposition.

Galatasaray started brightly and took the lead through Yunus Akgün, who finished off an assist from Osimhen.

However, that proved to be their only goal of the game. Marius Mouandilmadji equalised for Samsunspor in the 22nd minute. The home side took control in the second half after Galatasaray goalkeeper Günay Güvenç was sent off.

Mouandilmadji grabbed his second goal, while Cherif Ndiaye scored a brace to seal an emphatic win and delay Galatasaray’s title celebrations.

After the match, Osimhen admitted the team fell short but insisted their title ambitions remain firmly on track.

“We knew it wouldn’t be easy. We knew it would be a tough opponent,” Osimhen said, via NTV Spor.

“We were aware that winning the championship here wouldn’t be so easy. We didn’t play well either. We will win our home game and declare our championship.

“We also apologise to the fans. They didn’t leave us alone; they were by our side. We will look ahead.”

The 27-year-old striker assured supporters that the team will aim to wrap up the title when they host Antalyaspor at RAMS Park next week.

Galatasaray must avoid another slip, as dropped points would increase pressure ahead of their final fixture of the season against Kasımpaşa.

Osimhen is currently on 13 goals and five assist in 21 league games this season while he has seven more goals and three assists in 10 UEFA Champions League matches.
