Colman graduated from the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. She first became well known for her role in the Channel 4 sitcom Peep Show, which ran from 2003 to 2015. Sarah Caroline Colman was born in Norwich, Norfolk, on 30 January 1974. Her mother, Mary (née Leakey), was a nurse, and her father, Keith Colman, was a chartered surveyor.

She was privately educated at Norwich High School for Girls and then sixth form at Gresham’s School in Holt, Norfolk. Colman’s first role was Jean Brodie in a school production of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie at age 16. She cites her mother’s interrupted career as a ballet dancer as an inspiration to pursue acting professionally. Colman spent a term studying primary education at Homerton College, Cambridge, before studying drama at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, from which she graduated in 1999. During her time at Cambridge, she appeared in the Channel 4 series The Word in 1995 under her nickname “Colly”, auditioned for the Cambridge University Footlights Dramatic Club and met future co-stars David Mitchell and Robert Webb.

When Colman started acting professionally, she had to choose a different stage name because Equity, the UK actors’ union, already had a Sarah Colman. She told The Independent in 2013, “One of my best friends at university was called Olivia, and I always loved her name. I was never Sarah; I was always called by my nickname, Colly, so it didn’t seem so awful not to be called Sarah.”

In July 2018, Colman appeared on the UK genealogy show Who Do You Think You Are?. She thought her family history would mostly be linked to Norfolk, but found out her fourth great-grandfather, Richard Campbell Bazett, was born on St. Helena and worked in London for the East India Company. His son, Charles Bazett, married Harriot Slessor. Researchers found that Harriot was born in Kishanganj, India, lost her British father at age three, and traveled alone to England, with her journey paid for by her grandmother. Records showed that Harriot’s father lived with an Indian woman in Bihar, and Harriot was their child.

Personal life

In 1997, while acting in Sir Alan Ayckbourn’s Table Manners, Colman met Ed Sinclair, a law student who wanted to become a writer. They married in August 2001 and have three children. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, they moved from Peckham in south London to rural Norfolk. Colman said they moved partly because of press intrusion.

Colman and Sinclair have worked together on several projects. Sinclair created and co-wrote the 2021 miniseries Landscapers, and they produced the films Wicked Little Letters (2023) and The Roses (2025) together. Colman played the lead female role in each of these.

Colman has served as a judge for the Norwich Film Festival since 2013. In August 2014, she joined 200 public figures in signing a letter to The Guardian against Scottish independence before the September 2014 referendum. In a 2019 interview with The Sunday Times about playing Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown, Colman called herself a “leftie monarchist” and said she used to be a lifelong republican.

Colman signed an open letter that condemned violence and discrimination against trans women in November 2020.

She won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Emmy for The Night Manager (2016). She was also nominated for an Emmy for Fleabag (2016–2019). For playing Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown (2019–2020), she won a Golden Globe and an Emmy.

Colman won the Academy Award for Best Actress, the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, and the BAFTA for Best Actress in a Leading Role for playing Queen Anne in The Favourite (2018). She was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for The Father (2020), and for Best Actress for The Lost Daughter (2021). In 2019, she was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for her work in drama.
