Loni Kaye Anderson (August 5, 1945 – August 3, 2025) was an American actress. She was best known for playing Jennifer Marlowe, the receptionist on the CBS sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati (1978–1982). This role earned her three Golden Globe nominations and two Emmy nominations.

Biography and Education

Anderson was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, on August 5, 1945. Her father, Klaydon Carl “Andy” Anderson, worked as an environmental chemist, and her mother, Maxine Hazel (née Kallin), was once a model. She grew up in Roseville, a suburb of Saint Paul. In her senior year at Alexander Ramsey Senior High School, she was chosen as Queen of the Valentine’s Day Winter Formal in 1963.

In her autobiography My Life in High Heels, Anderson shared that her father originally wanted to name her Leilani. He changed his mind because he thought the name might be teased as “Lay Lani” when she was a teenager, so he chose Loni instead. She had a sister named Andrea. Anderson also said that their maternal grandmother, Hazel Kallin, was a schoolteacher who managed a dance hall during Prohibition.

Career

Anderson made her acting debut with a small role in the film Nevada Smith (1966), which starred Steve McQueen. For almost ten years after that, she struggled to find acting work. In the mid-1970s, she began getting guest roles on TV shows. She appeared in two episodes of S.W.A.T., as well as on Phyllis, Police Woman, and Harry O. She auditioned for the role of Chrissy on Three’s Company but did not get the part. However, in 1978, she guest-starred as Susan Walters in a Season Two episode.

Anderson became most famous for playing Jennifer Marlowe, the receptionist on WKRP in Cincinnati (1978–1982). Producers offered her the role after seeing a poster of her in a red swimsuit, which was similar to Farrah Fawcett’s well-known 1976 poster. The show’s creator, Hugh Wilson, said Anderson was chosen because she looked like Jayne Mansfield and had the innocent appeal of Marilyn Monroe. Her performance earned her three Golden Globe nominations and two Emmy nominations.

Although the show did not do well in the Nielsen ratings for most of its run, it was popular with teens, young adults, and disc jockeys. As her popularity grew, Anderson left the show during the 1980 summer break to ask for a higher salary. While negotiating her contract, she starred in the TV movie The Jayne Mansfield Story (1980). After the network agreed to her terms, she returned to the show and stayed until it ended in 1982.

Outside of acting, Anderson was also known for her eventful personal life, especially her relationship and marriage to actor Burt Reynolds. They appeared together in the comedy film Stroker Ace (1983), which did not do well with critics or at the box office. Later, she played herself in the romantic comedy The Lonely Guy (1984) with Steve Martin. She also provided the voice for Flo, a collie, in the animated film All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989).

Personal life

Anderson was married four times: to real estate developer Bruce Hasselberg (1964–1966), actor Ross Bickell (1974–1981), actor Burt Reynolds (1988–1994), and musician Bob Flick (2008 until her death). Flick, who helped start the folk band the Brothers Four, first met Anderson at a movie premiere in Minneapolis in 1963. Near the end of her marriage to Bickell, she had a well-known affair with her WKRP in Cincinnati co-star Gary Sandy.

Anderson had two children: a daughter named Deidra, whose father was Hasselberg, and a son named Quinton, whom she adopted with Reynolds. She also had four grandchildren.

Death

Anderson died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center from metastatic uterine leiomyosarcoma on August 3, 2025, at age 79. She was cremated and her remains were placed at Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
