LAMATA gets community backing for Ketu terminal

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority has secured the backing of community leaders in Agboyi-Ketu for the planned redevelopment of the Ketu lay-by into a modern bus terminal, as part of efforts to ease congestion and improve commuter experience along the corridor.

The development was disclosed in a statement recently obtained by The PUNCH, following a stakeholders’ meeting where government officials and local leaders agreed on key conditions to support the project.

According to the statement, the engagement “finalised plans for the transformation of the Ketu Lay-by (Demurin Bound) into a world-class modern bus terminal,” describing the project as a major component of the Ketu–Alapere–Akanimodo transport corridor.

It noted that the initiative was designed “to eliminate traffic bottlenecks and provide a structured, dignifying environment for thousands of commuters” who use the route daily.

The meeting drew a wide representation of traditional and political leaders, led by the Oba of Ketu-Kosofe, Isiaka Adio Balogun, alongside officials of Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area and members of the legislative arm.

Briefing participants, Femi Fayombo said contractors were set to mobilise to the site, adding that the terminal upgrade went beyond the initial scope of the project.

He said the state government expanded the plan “as a direct intervention to improve the quality of life and the efficiency of the transport system within the Ketu axis.”

Also speaking, the Director of Transport Policy and Coordination, S.A. Agbomeji, who represented the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, stressed that cooperation from residents and operators would be critical to the project’s success.

He explained that the government and the community had agreed on measures to ensure smooth execution, noting that “the project’s success hinges on a mutual agreement between the government and the community.”

The statement added that, under the arrangement, “market women and traders will vacate the roadsides and move into existing designated market stalls to ensure safety and prevent project obstruction.”

It further stated that “non-regulated transport operators will strictly maintain designated loading and off-loading zones to prevent the recurrence of gridlock.”

LAMATA said the proposed terminal formed part of the broader Lagos Strategic Transport Master Plan, aimed at developing an integrated system that links road, rail and water transportation for improved mobility across the state.
