Lagos orders school compliance checks ahead of resumption

The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has directed immediate monitoring and inspection of schools across the state to ensure compliance with safety regulations, environmental sanitation, proper attendance, and overall readiness for academic activities as the third term begins.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, issued the directive ahead of the official resumption date of Monday, May 4, 2026, for all public and private primary and secondary schools, as well as Government Technical Colleges, in line with the approved academic calendar.

The directive was disclosed in a statement obtained from the government’s Facebook page by The PUNCH on Sunday.

According to the ministry, “Inspection teams will be deployed statewide to assess adherence to required standards, including the condition of school environments, availability of learning facilities, and punctual resumption of both students and staff.”

School administrators were also advised, “to resume promptly, maintain proper records, and sustain teaching and learning activities from the first day of resumption to avoid unnecessary delays in academic work.”

The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, reiterated the government’s commitment to upholding standards across the education sector, stressing that “compliance with safety and sanitation protocols remains a key priority.”

The government further called on stakeholders, including school proprietors, teachers and parents, to support efforts aimed at ensuring a safe, orderly and productive academic term.
