JUST IN: Ex-Labour Party VP Candidate Datti Baba-Ahmed Officially Joins PRP

The 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has officially defected to the People’s Redemption Party (PRP), receiving his membership card in Zaria on Wednesday.

Baba-Ahmed, accompanied by political associates, registered at the PRP ward secretariat in Tudun Wada, Zaria, where he signed the party’s membership register.

Speaking after the exercise, he accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of focusing more on weakening opposition parties than addressing key national issues such as insecurity and economic hardship.

He alleged that several opposition platforms, including the Labour Party, had been deliberately undermined.

“They succeeded in crippling opposition parties, including my former party, the Labour P arty,” he said.

Baba-Ahmed, however, said the PRP had remained relatively stable, adding that it was not a primary target of political interference.

He stated that the PRP represented, in his view, the most credible opposition platform capable of challenging the APC.

“If you are talking about a credible opposition capable of challenging and replacing the APC, the PRP is the answer,” he added.

He also described the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as being in decline, while expressing uncertainty about the future of other parties such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Baba-Ahmed further alleged that there were ongoing efforts to destabilise the Labour Party, saying the situation influenced his decision to leave.

“I cannot be part of that,” he said.

He expressed confidence in the leadership of the PRP, describing it as credible and uncompromised, and predicted that the party would attract more Nigerians in the coming months.
