Ireland is contemplating the possibility of revoking visa-free travel privileges for South Africans as part of efforts to bolster immigration control amidst challenges in accommodating asylum seekers.
This is as government discussions are currently ongoing regarding potential revisions to visa policies.
According to The Irish Times, there is a rising concern about individuals from Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo utilizing South African passports to gain entry into Ireland.
Recent data from the Irish Department of Justice indicates that 198 individuals arriving in Ireland with South African passports are currently undergoing processing, constituting over three percent of total applicants thus far in 2024.
Irish politician Simon Harris has stated that the government aims to implement measures to manage the influx of asylum seekers entering Ireland via Northern Ireland.
Justice Minister Helen McEntee further noted that over 80% of international protection applicants entered the country through Northern Ireland.
Despite existing measures at airports, McEntee stressed the necessity of additional restrictions to effectively address the situation. With more than 5,000 asylum applications already received in Ireland this year and an anticipated surge in arrivals in the coming months, the Irish government faces pressure to accommodate approximately 1,600 male asylum seekers.
In response, the government is exploring alternative shelter options, including reaching out to church dioceses for temporary accommodation, reminiscent of past collaborations during conflicts such as the war in Ukraine.
Authorities are actively seeking alternative solutions while awaiting an official decision from the government on tightening asylum application regulations. Currently, South African citizens do not require an Irish visa for entry, though one is necessary for work, study, and naturalization in the country.
Meanwhile, a notable trend sees many South African expatriates returning home to capitalize on favorable exchange rates for property investment. With increased buying power, these individuals perceive South Africa as offering better long-term financial stability. Some of these buyers are still employed by international companies, leveraging remote work flexibility to settle back in South Africa.
