Biography
Fleiss grew up in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles in a Jewish family. Her father, Paul M. Fleiss (1933–2014), was a pediatrician, and her mother, Elissa Ash, was an elementary school teacher. They later divorced. She has two brothers, Jesse (born 1977) and Jason (born 1968), who died in 2009 at age 41, and three sisters: Amy, Kim, and Shana.
Prostitution ring and prosecution
When she was 22, Fleiss started managing a prostitution ring under Madam Alex after meeting her in 1987 through her boyfriend, film director Iván Nagy. In 2002, Fleiss described her relationship with Alex as “very intense” and said Alex saw her “kind of like the daughter she loved and hated, so she was abusive and loving at the same time.” Fleiss also said she briefly worked as a prostitute to learn about the business. At that time, there was a shortage of workers because many of Alex’s prostitutes were nearing retirement. Alex asked Fleiss to revitalize the business by recruiting younger women.
By 1990, Fleiss ended her partnership with Madam Alex and st arted her own prostitution r ing. She said she earned her first million dollars within four months as a madam, and even on her slowest night, she made $10,000. By 1991, she was successful enough to turn away women who wanted to work for her. In July 1992, with help from her father Paul, Fleiss bought a home in Benedict Canyon for $1.6 million. The house had previously belonged to Michael Douglas.

Business ventures
In July 1994, Fleiss opened a clothing store called Heidi Wear in Old Town Pasadena. The store later moved to Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica. In late 2003, she opened a second clothing store, Hollywood Madam, on Hollywood Boulevard, but it closed after a few months.
In 2005, Fleiss announced she planned to open a brothel in Pahrump, Nevada, called Heidi Fleiss’s Stud Farm. By 2007, she opened a laundromat in Pahrump named Dirty Laundry because her brothel plans were delayed by a “slight complication.” In 2009, Fleiss said she had given up on opening the brothel, explaining she did not want to “deal with all the nonsense in the sex business.” Instead, she decided to focus on renewable energy, calling it “perfect for Nevada” and “the wave of the future.” After her release from prison, she also opened a fashion boutique in Los Angeles.
Since at least January 2017, and as of April 2025, Fleiss has owned and managed the Flying S Ranch Ultralight Flightpark, a private ultralight airport in Pahrump with the FAA designation NV54.
Personal life
In April 2001, Fleiss was sentenced to six months of house detention after missing required drug tests and admitting to using methamphetamine and prescription pills.
Fleiss dated actor Tom Sizemore from 1999 to 2003. In 2003, she accused Sizemore of domestic violence. He was later convicted and sentenced to six months in jail and three years of probation.
Fleiss later moved to Pahrump, Nevada, a small town near Death Valley, where she cared for 25 parrots. Drew Pinsky, who treated her for substance abuse, performed brain scans that showed significant frontal lobe dysfunction. Pinsky believed this explained her difficulty empathizing with people and her strong connection to birds.
After finishing substance abuse treatment, Fleiss was briefly engaged to Dennis Hof, who owned Nevada’s Moonlite BunnyRanch.
In 1994, Fleiss said she is a vegetarian.
In August 2013, Nevada police found almost 400 marijuana plants growing at Fleiss’s home in Pahrump. They did not arrest her but sent their report to the district attorney’s office.
