FA introduces new restrictions on heading to protect young players

The Football Association has introduced new rules to limit heading in football amid growing concern over the long-term impact on players’ brain health.

As reported by BBC Sport on Monday, the decision follows emerging research suggesting that heading the ball creates a brief pulse of energy that passes into the brain at the moment of impact.

While each impact is small, experts warn that repeated exposure over time may contribute to neurological damage.

A major piece of research, the FIELD study, found that former professional footballers are around 3.5 times more likely to suffer from neurodegenerative diseases than the general population.

In response, the Football Association has introduced a phased ban on heading for children under 11 and issued guidance to limit high-force headers in training, particularly those from corners and free-kicks.

FA Chief Medical Officer Charlotte Cowie said, “This new independent research provides us with innovative and previously undiscovered insight, and it is part of our ongoing commitment to gain a greater understanding of this highly complex area.

“The results of the study have also been shared with FIFA and UEFA, and we continue to welcome a global approach to support further research in this important area.”

Elsewhere, the Scottish Football Association has taken a stricter approach, banning heading on the day before and after matches in the professional game.

Football authorities say the measures are designed to reduce potential risks while research continues into the long-term effects of heading, with calls increasing for a coordinated international response to protect players at all levels of the sport.
