Ex-foreign affairs minister Tuggar joins Bauchi governorship race

The immediate past Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Bauchi State.

Tuggar, who resigned his ministerial position in March 2026, said his decision was in line with the directive of President Bola Tinubu for political appointees seeking elective offices to step down.

Speaking on Saturday during a visit to the All Progressives Congress office in Bauchi ahead of his formal declaration, Tuggar said, “I approached the party office before moving to the declaration ground because the party is the first point of call. As directed by the President, I resigned my position on March 31.”

He called on party members to unite to reclaim power in the state, adding that he would support whoever emerges as the party’s flagbearer if he does not secure the ticket.

“My political philosophy is that whoever emerges as the party’s flag bearer, I will not take my fellow party member to court. I will support and wish the person well,” he said.

Later at the declaration ground, Tuggar said his aspiration was driven by a desire to serve and improve the welfare of the people, noting that Bauchi State faces challenges such as poverty, unemployment, insecurity, and limited access to quality education and healthcare.

He pledged to build on the achievements of past leaders while addressing existing gaps.

While outlining his plans, the former minister said his administration would prioritise economic growth through agriculture, support for small and medium enterprises, and development of solid minerals.

He also promised prompt payment of salaries, improved market infrastructure, and enhanced rural development.

Tuggar said he would strengthen collaboration between communities and security agencies, invest in intelligence gathering, and address root causes of insecurity, such as youth unemployment and drug abuse.

“We will ensure that no farmer fears going to the farm, no trader fears the road, and no child fears going to school,” he said.

He further pledged to improve education by tackling out-of-school children, investing in teachers, and expanding vocational training, while also promoting digital innovation among youths.

He promised accessible and affordable primary healthcare services and social protection for vulnerable groups in the health sector.

He added that his administration would focus on transparency, civil service reforms, infrastructure development, and inclusive governance, with special attention to women and minority communities.

“This is not just my ambition; it is a collective mission to move Bauchi State forward,” Tuggar said.
