The Ethnic Youth Leaders Forum has passed a vote of confidence on the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, describing him as a man of integrity and competence with a strong commitment to democratic principles.

The group’s position followed a recent protest by some UK-based Nigerians at the UK Parliament, where calls were made for the removal of Amupitan over allegations of partisanship and purported links to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Reacting in a statement signed by its Deputy Spokesperson, Mirabel Ashara, the Forum described the protest as “misguided, politically motivated, and lacking in credible evidence.”
“We find it deeply troubling that individuals who are far removed from the realities on ground in Nigeria would attempt to discredit a man whose career has been defined by professionalism, fairness, and adherence to the rule of law,” the group said.
The Forum said Amupitan’s record in academia, public service, and legal practice reflects his capacity to lead INEC with neutrality and transparency, particularly as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
“Allegations of partisanship must be backed by verifiable facts, not mere speculation or politically charged sentiments. So far, no concrete evidence has been presented to substantiate these claims,” the statement added.

It further stressed the need to protect the independence of INEC against external pressure and what it described as unsubstantiated attempts to undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
“We urge Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora, to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could erode trust in our democratic institutions. Constructive engagement, rather than sensational protests, remains the appropriate channel for addressing concerns,” Ashara stated.
The group also called on security and relevant authorities to remain vigilant against attempts to destabilise the electoral system through misinformation and undue political pressure.
