Enugu DisCo repairs storm-affected feeders

MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited says it has begun the repair of feeders affected by a heavy rainstorm in the Enugu metropolis.

The company said no fewer than 12 communities in the metropolis were plunged into darkness following a heavy rainstorm and strong winds that damaged key electricity infrastructure on Sunday afternoon.

The outage, which disrupted power supply across several parts of the state capital, was traced to a wire cut along the Emene Industrial Lines 1 and 2, which subsequently affected a distribution tower feeding major 33kV lines in the area.

In a public notice, MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited explained that the storm-related incident had a cascading effect on the Transmission Company of Nigeria Switch Yard at the New Haven Station, leading to the tripping of multiple feeders supplying parts of the metropolis.

According to the company, the affected feeders include the Trans Ekulu, Thinkers Corner, Ituku Ozalla and Ugwogo 33kV lines, which serve several densely populated and industrial communities.

As a result, electricity supply was cut off in Trans Ekulu, Emene, Thinkers Corner, Emenite, Airport, Alo Aluminium, Akpuoga, Nkwubor, Ugwuomu, Abakpa Nike, Nike Lake, and Ugwogo and adjoining areas.

Confirming the development, MEDL said its technical engineers had already been mobilised to the fault location, adding that efforts were ongoing to restore supply as quickly as possible.

“MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited wishes to inform its customers in parts of the Enugu metropolis that the current power outage is due to heavy rainfall and strong winds experienced on Sunday afternoon.

“The incident resulted in a wire cut on Emene Industrial Lines 1 and 2, which impacted a distribution tower and disrupted supply to several 33kV feeders within the Transmission Company of Nigeria Switch Yard at the New Haven Station.

“The affected feeders include Trans Ekulu, Thinkers Corner, Ituku Ozalla, and Ugwogo 33kV lines,” the company stated.

MEDL further noted that its teams were working round the clock to fix the fault, stressing that safety and system stability remained a priority during the restoration process.

“Our technical team is working diligently to rectify the fault and restore electricity supply to the affected areas as quickly as possible,” the company added.

It apologised to affected customers, describing the outage as an unforeseen development caused by extreme weather conditions.

“We sincerely regret the inconvenience this unforeseen development has caused our esteemed customers,” the statement read.

The company assured residents that power will be restored once necessary repairs were completed and the network stabilised.
