Doc Holliday was born John Henry Holliday on August 14, 1851, in Griffin, Georgia, to Henry Burroughs Holliday, a veteran of the Mexican-American War and Confederate Army major, and Alice Jane McKey Holliday. Tuberculosis had already claimed his mother (when he was 15) and an adopted brother. Holliday graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery in 1872 at age 20 with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. He briefly practised dentistry in Atlanta, Georgia, but was diagnosed with tuberculosis shortly afterwards, the same disease that killed his mother. Doctors advised him that the dry climate of the American Southwest might prolong his life, so he moved west in 1873.

Holliday gave up dentistry and became a professional gambler, which was a respected job in frontier towns.
