Boko Haram Sets Ablaze Three Fish Trucks in Borno Attack

Suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists intercepted and burned down three trucks carrying fish in the Mile-Forty area of Magumeri Local Government Area, Borno State, on Thursday afternoon.

The attack occurred around 1:00 pm as the vehicles were transporting the fish to Maiduguri, the state capital. The trucks included two Peugeot J5 models and one converted school bus, all fully loaded.

According to a security source, all the drivers managed to escape unharmed by fleeing into the bush, though the vehicles were completely destroyed by fire. No casualties were reported among the drivers or others.

One anonymous driver described the terrifying ordeal: “We parked the vehicles and ran into the bush. Thank God we all made it alive, but I watched helplessly as the only means of my livelihood got burnt to ashes.” He urged the federal government and security agencies to deploy more troops along the road to protect lives and property.

The driver noted a shift in tactics by the insurgents, who previously focused on abductions for ransom but now frequently loot and burn vehicles. He highlighted the lack of adequate security checkpoints on the route, with military presence limited mainly to Gajaganna, Gajiram, Mairari, and Monguno.

Truck drivers plying the Maiduguri-Monguno axis have repeatedly complained that insufficient security has emboldened the terrorists, leading to near-daily attacks. Recent incidents include the February 10 burning of four trailers carrying cows and, days earlier, four trucks loaded with beans set ablaze in Guzamala LGA.

Many drivers and truck owners are now avoiding the road, warning that ongoing insecurity could collapse thriving livestock and grain businesses in the region. They called for stronger measures, similar to enhanced deployments on the Gwoza axis, to secure the route and restore safe passage.

This latest attack adds to growing concerns over the persistent threat to commercial transport and food supply chains in Borno amid the long-running insurgency. Security forces have not yet issued an official statement on the incident.
