Chinese language strengthens Nigeria-China ties — Envoy, FG

The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria and the China Cultural Centre have highlighted the growing importance of Mandarin, the Chinese language, in fostering cultural exchange and strengthening bilateral relations.

Speaking in Abuja, as stakeholders gathered to mark the 2026 International Chinese Language Day, on behalf of the Chinese Embassy, Cultural Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy and Director of CCCIN, Mr Yang Jianxing, described the language as a vital link connecting civilisation, culture, and global cooperation.

In a welcome address, Jianxing said the celebration, now in its 17th edition, reflects the enduring relevance of the Chinese language across generations and continents.

“Chinese is the genetic link that carries the torch of 5,000 years of Chinese civilisation. Every Chinese character is not only a symbol of communication but also a historical memory and a crystallisation of wisdom,” he said.

Jianxing noted that Chinese has evolved from ancient scripts to modern forms, documenting the development of one of the world’s oldest civilisations while contributing to global knowledge.

Describing the language as a unifying force, Jianxing emphasised its global reach and relevance in diplomacy and education.

“Chinese is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. To date, more than 190 countries and regions worldwide have implemented Chinese language teaching, with over 200 million international learners and users,” he said.

He further described the language as a bridge of harmony, rooted in values of coexistence and mutual respect, which resonate with Nigerian cultural ideals.

Highlighting economic and developmental prospects, the Jianxing linked the growing interest in learning Chinese to expanding cooperation between Nigeria and China.

“Learning Chinese is undoubtedly an important shortcut to fully understanding China and realising one’s dreams through participation in mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Nigeria in various fields.

“We hope that more and more Nigerian friends will learn Chinese, understand China, and enhance exchanges,” he added.

In a goodwill message, the Director-General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Dr Mohammed Bulama, described language as central to human connection and global unity.

“Language is more than words, it is the soul of a people, the vessel of history, and the architecture of thought,” he said.

Bulama noted that the Chinese language remains one of humanity’s most enduring cultural treasures, reflecting centuries of wisdom and innovation.

He stressed the role of language in modern diplomacy and international engagement, saying, “The role of language as a tool for diplomacy, trade, media exchange, and cultural understanding cannot be overemphasised.”

The FRCN boss reaffirmed the corporation’s commitment to promoting intercultural dialogue through broadcasting, noting its reach across diverse audiences.

“The Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, as the largest radio network in Africa, has continued to broadcast news and programmes in over 25 languages and connect millions of audiences around the world,” he said.

He recalled the launch of Ni Hao China, a weekly programme introduced in July 2025 in collaboration with the Chinese Embassy, aimed at teaching Mandarin and promoting cultural ties.

“The Ni Hao China programme is part of the benefits of the agreements signed between Nigeria and China aimed at boosting trade, tourism, and communication between Nigeria and China,” Bulama added.

He urged continued collaboration through language and media, noting that embracing linguistic diversity fosters mutual understanding.

“Today’s celebration reminds us that in embracing each other’s languages, we embrace each other’s humanity,” he said.

Also speaking, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, FCT Council, Grace Ike, described the celebration as a testament to the unifying power of language in strengthening international relations.

“This event beautifully underscores the power of language as a bridge for cultures, fostering deeper understanding between Nigeria and China, two great nations bound by shared aspirations for progress, innovation, and mutual prosperity,” she said.

She commended the Chinese Embassy and the China Cultural Centre for their collaboration with journalists in the Federal Capital Territory, noting that the partnership has enhanced balanced reporting and cultural exchange.

“Your unwavering support, openness, and collaborative spirit have enabled balanced reporting, cultural exchanges, and insightful stories that strengthen Nigeria-China ties,” Ike stated.
