Avoid prolonged sun exposure, Oyo cautions residents

The Oyo State Government has advised residents to take precautionary measures against rising temperatures expected in the coming weeks.

The warned against prolonged exposure to the sun as occasional heat waves set in during the transition into the 2026 rainy season.

The advisory also comes alongside warnings of possible flash floods, temporary road overflows, and thunderstorms as rainfall intensifies across the state.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, said the state was likely to experience short-term flooding and thunderstorms due to the high intensity of rainfall associated with the onset of the rainy season.

Aderinto explained that the soil across the state is still relatively firm, limiting water infiltration and leading to surface runoff on roads, drainages and some communities.

He, however, cautioned that flooding could become prolonged and destructive if waterways and drainage channels cleared by the government are blocked or tampered with.

“The State Government is using this period to call for the suspension of illegal dredging and any activity that could disrupt natural water flow,” Aderinto added.

The commissioner also warned that prolonged water retention on roads could damage infrastructure, increase accident risks, and affect public facilities, urging residents to avoid indiscriminate waste disposal and other environmental violations.

On rising temperatures, Aderinto disclosed that occasional heat waves may occur during the season transition, with temperatures expected to rise between 33°C and 35°C.

He advised residents to stay hydrated, remain in cool environments, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and seek shade when necessary.

Aderinto assured that the government would continue to monitor environmental conditions across the state to mitigate risks associated with both flooding and heat stress.
