Atilola, Zara, others shine at junior tennis tournament

Nigeria’s up-and-coming tennis stars, Atilola Mofifun and Zara Adegoke emerged as champions in the U-16 and U-12 categories, respectively, at the second edition of the Tennista Foundation Junior Tennis Tournament, held at the Lagos Country Club, Ikeja, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The three-day tournament, played on clay courts, brought together budding tennis players who showcased their talents from Thursday.

In the girls’ U-12 category, Zara Adegoke defeated Akpan Mercy 4-1, 4-2, while Mohammed Naseer secured a 5-3, 4-2 victory over Awi Rafael in the boys’ U-12 division.

In the boys’ U-16 category, Afaramai Heman triumphed over Aluko Nathaniel 4-2, 4-2 to claim the title.

Speaking after the event, the President of the Tennista Foundation, Michael Nwoseh, highlighted improvements in this year’s tournament, noting increased participation and better infrastructure.

He said over 60 players competed across male and female categories, with the introduction of the U-12 division creating more opportunities for younger athletes.

Nwoseh pointed to growing corporate sponsorship and improved court arrangements as indicators of rising standards, expressing confidence that the competition would continue to expand.

“We’re excited to host this second edition. It’s an all-clay event this time, and the players competed at a very high level.

“For some of the young athletes, this was their first time playing on clay, and we are pleased they gained valuable competitive experience through our foundation.

“This exposure will help them strengthen their game and improve their ability to compete across different surfaces,” he said.

Mofifun, who won the U-16 title, expressed delight at her victory, noting that she focused on enjoying her game rather than chasing points.

She said winning the trophy, educational prizes, and other rewards made her proud, especially after missing out the previous year.

The young champion also appreciated the organisers for providing a platform that motivates children to compete and build confidence, adding that the rewards, including a new racket, would further boost her development.

Meanwhile, the Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, represented by Oriyomi Oluwasanmi, emphasised the importance of sports in youth development.

He noted that tournaments like this help nurture well-rounded individuals while reducing social vices among young people.

He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to supporting such initiatives, describing them as vital platforms for talent discovery ahead of national competitions, including the upcoming Under-18 National Sports Games to be hosted by Lagos.

He also urged both winners and participants to remain dedicated, stressing that consistent training and discipline are key to future success.

The winners received prizes, including educational grants, brand-new tennis rackets, school bags, and other gifts from sponsors.
