Arnold Rothstein (January 17, 1882 – November 6, 1928), known as “The Brain,” was an American racketeer, gangster, businessman, and gambler. He became a leading figure in the Jewish Mob in New York City. Rothstein was widely believed to have organized corruption in professional sports, including the 1919 World Series fix. He also mentored future crime bosses such as Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky, Frank Costello, Bugsy Siegel, and many others.

Rothstein is credited with “transforming organized crime from a thuggish activity by hoodlums into a big business run like a corporation.” He became well known as one of the first to see the profits possible during Prohibition and “understood the truths of early 20th century capitalism (giving people what they want) and came to dominate them.” His reputation inspired several fictional characters, including Meyer Wolfsheim in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby (1925).

Biography and Education

Arnold Rothstein was born in New York City on January 17, 1882, to Abraham Rothstein, an affluent Ashkenazi Jewish businessman, and Esther Rothschilds. His father, known as “Abe the Just,” was respected for his strong character. Rothstein was very good at mathematics but did not care much for school. As a child, he was difficult and envied his older brother Harry, who was studying to become a rabbi. His father thought Arnold wanted to be the center of attention and was frustrated when he was not.

Rothstein started gambling as a child, even though his father often warned him against it. In 1921, when asked how he became a gambler, Rothstein said: “I always gambled. I can’t remember when I didn’t. Maybe I gambled just to show my father he couldn’t tell me what to do, but I don’t think so. I think I gambled because I loved the excitement. When I gambled, nothing else mattered.”

Death

On November 4, 1928, Rothstein was shot and wounded during a business meeting at the Park Central Hotel in Manhattan, near Seventh Avenue and 55th Street. He died two days later at the New York Polyclinic Hospital.

The shooting was reportedly connected to debts from a three-day high-stakes poker game in October, where Rothstein owed $320,000 (about $6 million in 2025). He said the game was fixed and refused to pay, which led to his murder. Gambler George “Hump” McManus was arrested for homicide but was later acquitted due to lack of evidence.
