69 killed, 246 injured in Lagos road crashes in Q1 2026 – LASTMA

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority says 69 people died on roads across the state in the first quarter of 2026.

The agency also said 246 others sustained varying degrees of injuries in road accidents within the same period.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Lagos.

Bakare-Oki also said the authority cleared more than 600 accident scenes during the period.

He said LASTMA resolved over 900 infractions involving trucks and other articulated vehicles while also carrying out 4,900 physical enforcement operations.

He added that the agency recorded about 17,942 offences through technology-driven enforcement, including the use of Traffic Management Solution devices.

According to him, LASTMA maintains zero tolerance for traffic infractions, adding that impounded vehicles would be promptly arraigned before the Lagos State Mobile Court.

“For the first quarter, we have been able to improve on our service delivery, especially ensuring significant improvement in the travel time of Lagos residents,” he said.

“We have carried out a total overhaul of all traffic equipment and recovery vehicles, ensuring they are strategically repositioned to improve our response time to traffic incident management.

“In terms of personnel, we have also embarked on training and reorientation for better service delivery.”

Bakare-Oki said the agency had developed a year-long training calendar outlining how personnel would be trained from January to December 2026.

“We are planning to train over 1,000 of our officers, and we have already started — both internal and external training,” he said.

“We have engaged various consultants for external training.

“As the months unfold, we will roll out and actively engage in high-level capacity-building programmes for all our staff.”
