Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential aspirant, Peter Obi, has vowed to clamp down on all forms of criminality if elected President in 2027.

Obi made the statement while describing fuel subsidy as an organised crime against Nigeria.

Speaking on Trust TV, the former Labour Party candidate, now with the NDC, argued that Nigeria’s reported fuel consumption figures are unrealistic when compared with countries of similar size.

“Subsidy is organized crime and I won’t allow any form of criminality as the President of Nigeria. The amount of fuel they say we consume cannot be consumed by this country, there’s emperical evidence,” he said.

“We are about the same as Pakistan, they have more roads and we probably have the same number of vehicles or they have even more, yet their fuel consumption is a third of ours, so who is drinking the balance?” he added.

Obi recalled that during the 2023 presidential election, he and other candidates had pledged to remove fuel subsidy.

President Bola Tinubu, who emerged winner of the election, subsequently announced the removal of fuel subsidy during his inauguration at Eagle Square in Abuja.
