2027: Buba Galadima says Atiku must join NDC or risk blame if opposition fails

A chieftain of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC, Buba Galadima, has called on former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to join the party, warning that he could be held responsible if opposition forces fail to secure victory in the 2027 presidential election.

Mr Galadima made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television on Monday, where he spoke on ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s opposition political space.

According to him, key opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have already aligned under the NDC platform in a bid to build a stronger coalition capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

He alleged that there were attempts to weaken the opposition through legal and institutional means, insisting that unity remained the only viable path to electoral success in 2027.

“The truth of the matter is that Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso migrated into the ADC; they brought unity of opposition to unseat Tinubu. Unfortunately, there are insinuations that the APC and the government used the courts to unseat the opposition,” he said.

Mr Galadima, therefore, urged Atiku to align with the emerging coalition under the NDC, arguing that his participation would strengthen the opposition’s chances.

“This is why I’m making this call on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to follow us as we followed him into the ADC, such that there will be unity of opposition to unseat this government, and if he refuses, Atiku will be held responsible,” he said.

He warned that failure to join the coalition could weaken the opposition’s electoral prospects.

“The reality is that all the political gladiators are now in the NDC. If anyone stays outside, like Kwankwaso was outside and was persuaded into the ADC, we are also pleading with Atiku to come into the NDC so we can consolidate and remove the incumbent government,” he added.

Mr Galadima further argued that staying outside the coalition would amount to undermining opposition unity, insisting that it could affect Atiku’s political relevance ahead of the 2027 elections.

“If he refuses to do that, then he has scuttled the unity of the opposition to unseat this government. He cannot continue to stay out and expect things to work for him politically,” he said.
