US disbursed $1.3bn aid to Nigeria in two years – Report

The United States disbursed a total of $1,385,151,397 in foreign assistance to Nigeria over the 2024 and 2025 fiscal years.

The data was published on the US Department of State’s website on April 30, 2026, under the title, ‘US Foreign Assistance.’

Under the Nigeria category, the breakdown of the disbursement showed that the country received $879,102,695 in 2024 and $646,404,163 in 2025.

Nigeria is the fifth recipient in the sub-Saharan African countries that received US assistance.

In 2024, the bulk of the funds was implemented through the US Agency for International Development, which accounted for $738,747,234 of the total disbursement.

Other major implementing agencies included the Department of Health and Human Services with $112,061,903 and the Department of State with $19,910,940.

Mid-level allocations were recorded for the Trade and Development Agency at $2,930,251 and the African Development Foundation at $2,480,235.

Smaller allocations went to the Department of the Treasury with $1,077,466, the Department of Agriculture with $995,674, and the Department of Defence with $960,076.

The Department of the Interior received $6,266, while the Department of Transportation got $4,650.

Several agencies, including the Millennium Challenge Corporation, Department of Justice, Department of Labour, Department of Commerce, Department of Energy, Department of Homeland Security, Peace Corps, Environmental Protection Agency, Department of the Army, Department of the Navy, Department of the Air Force, Inter-American Foundation, and the US International Development Finance Corporation, recorded $0 in disbursements.

In 2025, total US foreign assistance to Nigeria stood at $646,404,163.

USAID again accounted for the largest share with $597,602,944. The Department of Health and Human Services followed with $33,284,125, while the Department of State disbursed $12,145,286.

Other agencies contributing in 2025 included the Department of the Treasury with $709,987, the Department of Defence with $143,690, and the Department of the Interior with $81,152.

The Trade and Development Agency disbursed $1,698,706, while the African Development Foundation accounted for $738,273.

As in the previous year, several agencies recorded no disbursements in 2025.

These included the Millennium Challenge Corporation, Department of Agriculture, Department of Justice, Department of Labour, Department of Commerce, Department of Energy, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Transportation, Peace Corps, Environmental Protection Agency, Department of the Army, Department of the Navy, Department of the Air Force, Inter-American Foundation, and the US International Development Finance Corporation.

The disclosure comes as US lawmakers consider tighter conditions for future aid to Nigeria.

The US House Appropriations Committee on Wednesday advanced provisions in the proposed 2027 appropriations bill that would require stricter oversight of funds to the country.

Under the proposal, up to 50 per cent of US assistance allocated to Nigeria could be withheld until the Secretary of State certifies that the Federal Government is taking effective steps to address insecurity, protect vulnerable populations, and hold perpetrators of violence accountable.

The bill also introduces cost-sharing requirements and links funding to progress on counterterrorism, human rights, and humanitarian efforts.

The measure, which still requires approval by the full US Congress and the President, reflects growing concern among US lawmakers over ongoing violence in Nigeria, particularly attacks affecting Christian communities.

The Federal Government has, however, consistently denied allegations of religious persecution, maintaining that insecurity in the country affects citizens of all faiths while affirming continued cooperation with the US on security reforms.
