The UK government has unveiled a new directive, permitting only international students embarking on Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) journeys to bring along their dependants.
Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, made known the directive in an exclusive interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
Montgomery pointed out that the adjustment in educational policy earlier this year was aimed at reducing the influx of foreign students bringing dependants into the UK.
He stressed that the significant rise in dependants was straining many universities, prompting the introduction of the alterations.
However, Montgomery made it clear that the restrictions are not blanket policies, assuring that individuals pursuing long-term research endeavours such as a PhD or doctorate are exempted from such constraints.
“Those venturing to the UK for a doctorate program can still bring their loved ones along for the ride. However, if you’re journeying with a study visa for an undergraduate degree or a short-term master’s program, I’m afraid the rules have taken a different turn,” he remarked.
“It’s imperative for people to grasp the reasoning behind these adjustments. It’s a strategic move, considering the sprawling landscape of our higher education sector, with universities dotting towns across the nation.”
