Trump says Iran and Ukraine wars could end ‘on a similar timetable’

U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated that the conflicts in Ukraine and Iran could conclude on a “similar timetable” following a 90-minute phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Describing the exchange as “frank and businesslike,” Trump suggested that a breakthrough in the years-long Russia-Ukraine war might be approaching, while also addressing the nuclear standoff with Tehran.

During the call, Trump proposed a “little bit of a ceasefire” in Ukraine, a suggestion to which Putin reportedly responded by offering a temporary pause in hostilities to coincide with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations on May 9.

 Trump expressed optimism about a swift resolution, noting that he believes the Russian leader has been “ready to make a deal a while ago” but was previously hindered by external influences. Trump remained firm on his priorities, reportedly telling Putin, “Before you help me [with Iran], I want to end your war.”

The discussion also delved into Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Putin reportedly offered to assist the United States regarding Iranian uranium enrichment, a gesture Trump acknowledged while reiterating that both nations share the goal of a non-nuclear Iran. 

However, the U.S. President maintained a blunt stance on the current state of Iran’s military, claiming that recent operations have decimated approximately 80% of Tehran’s missile-making facilities and neutralized its air force, navy, and radar systems.

“We’re not going to let Iran have a nuclear weapon. They know it, and just about everybody else does,” Trump concluded, signaling that the U.S. is prepared to eliminate remaining facilities if a diplomatic deal is not reached. 

Despite the military pressure, the diplomatic channel remains active; this conversation marked the 12th interaction between the two leaders since Trump returned to office in 2025. Both sides have agreed to continue high-level dialogue to advance negotiations on both global friction points.
