Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story exited Friday night’s 8-6 victory against the Oakland Athletics following a left shoulder injury sustained during a diving play. The incident occurred in the fourth inning as Story attempted to field a hit by Nick Ahmed.
Story, visibly in pain, received on-field treatment before leaving the game. Alex Cora, Red Sox manager, confirmed that Story is set for an MRI on Saturday to assess the severity of the injury.
Expressing frustration, Story remarked post-game, “Frustrating, man. A lot of emotions. We don’t know how severe it is just yet, but a lot of frustration… Pretty painful.”
Story, 31, who joined the Red Sox last season, had been on the field for just over 144 games so far due to injuries. He missed several games in 2022 due to a wrist fracture and had surgery later on his ulnar collateral ligament.
Discussing Story’s impact, Cora acknowledged, “He’s a guy that very quietly has become the leader of this team,” highlighting Story’s pivotal role within the Red Sox lineup.
Prior to his stint in Boston, Story played for the Arizona Diamondbacks, showcasing an impressive record of 158 home runs and 100 stolen bases, earning him two All-Star selections and Silver Slugger Awards.
If Story’s injury sidelines him, the Red Sox may turn to Christian Koss, a utility infielder, or consider calling up prospects like Jeter Downs from Worcester.
Following the win against the Athletics, the Red Sox stand at a 6-2 record, sharing the top spot in the American League East with the Tampa Bay Rays.
