‘Star Wars’ lightsaber, ‘Wizard of Oz’ witch hat, other iconic Hollywood props going up for auction

The ‘Star Wars’ lightsaber, ‘Wizard of Oz’ witch hat, and other iconic Hollywood props are going up for auction in New York, United States.

The memorabilia auction scheduled for July will offer collectors the chance to bid on props, costumes and documents from some of film and music’s best-known productions.

The Hollywood & Entertainment Signature Auction, presented by Heritage Auctions in New York, will run from July 13 to 17 and feature items from films, including Star Wars, The Wizard of Oz, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Back to the Future II, Rocky and The Big Lebowski.

Among the most anticipated items is a lightsaber used by Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker in The Empire Strikes Back. The prop was featured during the Cloud City duel between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, the scene in which Vader reveals, “I am your father.”

The lightsaber, which has never been auctioned before, will open for bidding at $1 million. It also includes a severed hand effects rig used during filming.

The Hollywood memorabilia auction will also feature a hat worn by Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz. Bidding for the item will begin at $100,000.

Another featured item is the brown top hat worn by Gene Wilder in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, which will open at $50,000.

Fans of the Rocky franchise will have the opportunity to bid on boxing boots worn by Sylvester Stallone in Rocky III. The boots, seen in the film’s opening montage, will start at $100,000.

Also included in the sale are two rugs from The Big Lebowski. One belongs to Jeff Bridges’ character, “The Dude,” while the other is the replacement rug taken from his wealthy namesake. Bidding on each rug will start at $15,000.

Other items available at the Hollywood memorabilia auction include hoverboards from Back to the Future II, a draft screenplay for The Godfather sequel, John Lennon’s handwritten lyrics for “If I fell,” a Paul Newman hockey jersey from Slap Shot, a necklace from The Bride of Frankenstein and the inflatable “Otto the Autopilot” from Airplane.

Commenting on the collection, Joe Maddalena, executive vice president of Heritage Auctions, said:

“This auction represents the full spectrum of entertainment history, from Hollywood’s Golden Age to modern blockbuster cinema and the most influential moments in popular music.”
