Sporting Lagos began their 2026 Nigeria National League Super 4 campaign with a narrow 1–0 victory over Ranchers Bees at the Remo Stars Stadium on Monday evening, PUNCH Online reports.
With the title of the second-tier league at stake for the four conference leaders following qualification for the Nigeria Premier Football League, the Lagos side started brightly and imposed themselves early, creating the first clear opening in the 17th minute when Seun Akanji found space in the final third, only to be denied by a sharp save from the Ranchers Bees goalkeeper.
Sporting Lagos maintained control of possession and territory for much of the first half, with Aliyu Baba also posing a threat in attacking areas, but they initially struggled to break down a well-organised Bees defence.
The breakthrough came five minutes before the interval following a well-constructed move down the flank.
Shola Oladunjoye combined effectively with Akanji, who delivered a precise cross into the area, allowing Alex Leme to rise above his marker and head home in the 40th minute.
Ranchers Bees attempted to respond after the restart, pushing forward in search of an equaliser, but Sporting Lagos remained disciplined at the back to preserve their lead in a contest largely defined by defensive organisation.
Akanji, who provided the assist and was influential throughout the match, was named Man of the Match.

Reflecting on the performance at a press conference monitored by PUNCH Online, he praised his teammates’ collective effort and emphasised the importance of maintaining focus as the competition progresses.
“This award means a lot, but it’s not just about me, it is about the team. Everyone put in a great shift today, and that’s what got us the win,” he said.
“We are happy with the start, but we know there’s still a lot ahead, so we stay focused and keep working hard.”
Among those in attendance were the former minister of youth and sports development, Sunday Dare; the chairman of the league, George Aluo; Ganiyu Majekodunmi of the Nigeria Football Federation; and former international Felix Owolabi.
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle and his assistant Daniel Ogunmodede were also present at the venue.
In the other fixture, Doma United are scheduled to face Inter Lagos later on Monday under floodlights at the same venue.
