Serie A: Lukaku, Napoli resolve training dispute after talks

Serie A side Napoli and striker Romelu Lukaku have resolved a recent training dispute following what have been described as positive and constructive talks in Naples.

According to BBC Sport on Monday, the 32-year-old Belgium international had been facing the possibility of disciplinary action after the club believed he had failed to respond to a request to return to Italy for training during his injury rehabilitation.

Lukaku had instead remained in Belgium as he worked his way back from a hamstring problem that had disrupted much of his season.

However, the forward returned to Naples in recent days to meet with club officials, including sporting director Giovanni Manna and his agent Federico Pastorello.

A source close to the discussions said: “The meeting was calm, collaborative, and constructive. Both sides were able to clarify their positions, and there is now a mutual understanding. The situation has been resolved amicably.”

Lukaku has made just seven appearances this season due to injury, with his last outing coming as a substitute in Napoli’s 2-1 win over Torino on 6 March.

During the talks, the striker provided an update on his recovery, with Napoli said to be satisfied with his progress.

“Romelu explained his rehabilitation plan and current condition,” another source said. “The club are comfortable with where things stand and are hopeful he can return to selection within the next couple of weeks.”

The resolution brings an end to a potentially disruptive situation for Napoli as they continue their campaign, with Lukaku now expected to complete his recovery in Belgium before rejoining the squad ahead of a possible return to action later this month.
