In 2002, Giuliani founded the security consulting firm Giuliani Partners and later acquired and sold Giuliani Capital Advisors, an investment banking company. In 2005, he joined the law firm that became Bracewell & Giuliani. He was an early frontrunner for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination but withdrew after poor primary results and subsequently endorsed John McCain. After opting not to run for New York governor in 2010 or for president in 2012, Giuliani concentrated on his business ventures.
Giuliani advised Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign and early in his administration. In April 2018, he joined Trump’s personal legal team and stayed on through the 2020 election. Biography and Education
Giuliani was born on May 28, 1944, in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, which was mostly an Italian American neighborhood at the time. He was the only child of Helen and Harold Giuliani, both children of Italian immigrants.
Giuliani was raised Roman Catholic. At age seven, his family moved from Brooklyn to Garden City South on Long Island, where he attended St. Anne’s Catholic School. He later commuted to Brooklyn to attend Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, graduating in 1961. He earned a degree in political science and philosophy from Manhattan College in the Bronx in 1965, serving as class president in his second year and joining the Phi Rho Pi forensic fraternity and honor society. Although he considered becoming a priest, he chose to attend New York University School of Law, where he participated in the Law Review and graduated cum laude with a Juris Doctor in 1968.
Disbarment
In June 2021, Giuliani’s law license was suspended in New York while he was investigated for his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. He was disbarred in New York on July 2, 2024, and later disbarred in the District of Columbia on September 26, 2024, under reciprocal discipline.
Personal life
Giuliani married Regina Peruggi, his second cousin and childhood acquaintance, on October 26, 1968. Their marriage faced problems by the mid-1970s, and they agreed to a trial separation in 1975. Peruggi did not move to Washington when Giuliani took a job at the U.S. Attorney General’s Office. In 1982, Giuliani met Donna Hanover, a local TV personality, and they started dating while she worked in Miami. Giuliani filed for legal separation from Peruggi on August 12, 1982. Their marriage ended with a civil divorce by the end of 1982 and a Roman Catholic annulment in 1983, reportedly because they were second cousins. Alan Placa, Giuliani’s best man, later became a priest and helped with the annulment. Giuliani and Peruggi did not have children.

Giuliani married Hanover at St. Monica’s Church in Manhattan on April 15, 1984. They had two children: Andrew and Caroline Rose, a filmmaker in the LGBTQ+ community who has described herself as “multiverses apart” from her father. In May 1999, while still married to Hanover, Giuliani met Judith Nathan, a sales manager for a pharmaceutical company, at Club Macanudo, an Upper East Side cigar bar.
By 1996, Donna Hanover had resumed using her professional name and had largely stopped appearing in public with Giuliani amid rumors of marital difficulties. Giuliani and Nathan began an ongoing relationship. In the summer of 1999, Giuliani charged the costs of his NYPD security detail to various city agencies to conceal his relationship with Nathan. In early 2000, the police department began providing Nathan with city-funded chauffeur services.
By March 2000, Giuliani had stopped wearing his wedding ring. The appearances that he and Nathan made at functions and events became publicly visible, although they were not mentioned in the press. The Daily News and the New York Post both broke news of Giuliani’s relationship with Nathan in early May 2000. Giuliani first publicly acknowledged her on May 3, 2000, when he said Judith was his “very good friend”.
On May 10, 2000, Giuliani held a press conference to announce his intention to separate from Hanover, without informing her beforehand. He was widely criticized for this omission. During the conference, Giuliani praised Nathan as a “very, very fine woman” and stated about Hanover, “over the course of some period of time in many ways, we’ve grown to live independent and separate lives.” Hours later, Hanover responded, “I had hoped that we could keep this marriage together.”
For several years, it was difficult to participate in Rudy’s public life because of his relationship with one staff member,” referring to another woman on Giuliani’s staff. By August 2001, Giuliani had moved out of Gracie Mansion and into an apartment with friends. He filed for divorce from Hanover in October 2000, leading to a public dispute between their representatives. Nathan was prohibited by court order from entering Gracie Mansion or meeting Giuliani’s children before the divorce was finalized.
