Police Gives Update On Officer Who Killed Man In Delta State

The Delta State Police Command has said the Assistant Superintendent of Police who shot dead a suspect in Effurun, Delta State, will face murder charges.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, disclosed this on Wednesday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.

The officer, identified as ASP Nuhu Usman, was captured in a viral video shooting 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, who had allegedly been apprehended over a parcel containing a pistol and ammunition.

Edafe said Usman and members of his team had been transferred to the Force Headquarters, Abuja, for disciplinary action.

Describing the incident as sad and unexplainable, Edafe said the officer acted in clear violation of police rules.

He said, “I will start with the issue at hand, which is a very sad issue. Since my six years of public relations, this is my most difficult moment because having an incident that cannot be explained is very difficult. There is no explanation for this.

“That policeman, I just don’t get what I would say was wrong with him.”

Edafe said that although the police could not attribute misconduct to spirituality, the officer’s action was difficult to explain.

He added, “Police cannot attribute the problem to spirituality, but that may not be far from it because that’s the only explanation one can give to what he did.”

Suspect Allegedly Caught With Pistol

According to the police, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, after operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command responded to information that Ogidi had been apprehended while allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel.

The parcel was said to have contained a Beretta pistol and four rounds of live ammunition.

Edafe said the suspect had already been restrained by members of the motor park before the police team arrived.

He said, “They quickly arrested the guy and tied him to his back and called the area commander, Effurun Area Command, who now mandated a surveillance team led by this ASP to go and bring the suspect.

“The instruction was very clear. Go and bring the suspect. That was the instruction.”

The police spokesman said the suspect was not a threat to the officer at the time he was shot.

He said, “One would wonder why a suspect who is not a threat to you, a suspect who is already tied to his back, a suspect who was begging for his life, you try to shoot him the first time, it did not work, you remove your magazine, arrange it again and shoot him for the second time.

“It is not explainable. It is not pardonable.”

Edafe assured members of the public that the police would not shield the officer.

He said, “I want members of the public to know that the police does not cover officers like that. I’m very sure that guy will have his day in court and will face murder charges.”

He added that the officer had been moved from Delta to Benin before being taken to Abuja.

Team Members Also Moved To Abuja

Edafe said Usman was not the only officer taken to the Force Headquarters.

According to him, the entire five-man team, led by the area commander, was moved to Abuja because they failed to restrain their colleague.

He said, “It is a team of five and the five of them are on their way. They should be in Force Headquarters. It’s not only ASP Nuhu that was taken to the Force Headquarters.

“The entire team was taken to the Force Headquarters because it behoves on them to stop their colleague from doing the wrong thing.”

Edafe said the officers could not completely exonerate themselves because the viral video did not show them making any attempt to stop Usman.

“You can restrain, you can even disarm your colleague when he is going out of line. They ought to have done that. They did not do that,” he said.

When asked why Usman’s face was covered in the command’s statement announcing his arrest, Edafe said it was the professional thing to do.

He also explained that the officers seen in mufti in the video were attached to the surveillance team of the Effurun Area Command.

According to him, their vehicle was clearly branded, showing that they were policemen.

Edafe said the officer would be held accountable for his actions, adding that every suspect had the right to life.

He said, “Nobody has the monopoly of just going about killing people because you are carrying firearm given to you by the government of Nigeria to protect life and property.”
