Plateau Transport Ministry Empowers New Staff with In-House Training for Professional Excellence, Better Service Delivery

The Plateau State Ministry of Transport has taken a proactive step toward enhancing professionalism and efficiency by organizing a one-day in-house training for its newly employed staff.

Held at the State Secretariat in Jos, the program brought together ministry personnel for focused sessions on critical areas of public service. The training covered key topics including Public Service and Civil Service Rules, Work Ethics and Etiquette, Financial Regulations, an Overview of Procurement Law, Mental Health, Public Relations, and Publicity.

Declaring the training open, the Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Jatau Davou Gyang, emphasized that the initiative underscores the ministry’s unwavering commitment to building a skilled, professional workforce capable of delivering superior services.

He highlighted the pivotal role of the transport sector in driving economic growth and social development across Plateau State, noting that continuous capacity building is essential for effective performance.

“A skilled and well-equipped workforce is key to fulfilling our mandate,” the commissioner stated. He urged participants to take personal responsibility for their development by making productive use of work hours, embracing lifelong learning, and prioritizing computer literacy and digital skills—now indispensable in modern public service.

Hon. Gyang described the training as a strategic investment in the ministry’s future, encouraging staff to apply the acquired knowledge to foster better teamwork, accountability, and improved transport services statewide.

The sessions featured expert presentations: Mr. Benjamin Sukumkya spoke on Public Service and Civil Service Rules; Mrs. Simi Chollom addressed Work Ethics and Etiquette; Mr. Hezekiah Vwamse covered Financial Regulations; Mr. Suleiman Lapson provided an Overview of Procurement Law; Mrs. Ujin Joseph Mallai discussed Public Relations and Publicity; and Dr. Yusuf Maigari delivered an insightful session on Mental Health.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Jummai Shekarau, reinforced the importance of the program, stating that it is vital for boosting staff performance, professionalism, and overall effectiveness.

She called on participants to integrate the lessons into their daily duties, affirming that ongoing training remains crucial to achieving the ministry’s objectives and elevating service delivery.

Participants expressed appreciation for the ministry’s initiative, noting its positive impact on their knowledge, skills, and work attitudes. Mangut Emmanuel Weng, one of the attendees, commended the training for clarifying roles and responsibilities—particularly in accountability and transparency—which he said would guide improved performance throughout the year.

The event aligns with broader efforts by the Plateau State Government under Governor Caleb Mutfwang to strengthen public institutions through targeted staff development, ensuring the transport sector remains a catalyst for progress and improved livelihoods across the state.
