Fitness enthusiasts gathered in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Sunday for the maiden edition of the Pitstop Community Super Sprint Triathlon, an initiative aimed at promoting healthy living and grassroots sports development in Nigeria.
The event, held at Pitstop Village, featured a three-stage race comprising a 150m swim, a 20km cycling stretch, and a 2.5km run. Organisers also offered over N2m in prize money, attracting both amateur and experienced athletes.
Founder of Pitstop Community, Aminadab Adegboro, said the initiative is part of efforts to build a strong fitness culture in Lagos while nurturing emerging talents.
“The whole idea is to give back to society and strengthen the grassroots,” she said. “We want people to stay active, disciplined, and live a healthy lifestyle.”
She added that Pitstop began as a cycling group during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 but has since evolved into a broader fitness community that includes running and walking groups.
“We are not a club; we are a community. Anybody can join us,” she said.
President of the Nigeria Triathlon Union, Wale Oladunjoye, described the event as a positive development for the sport in the country.
“We have been looking for this kind of environment,” he said. “It will help the sport grow and attract more participants.”

He also emphasised the need for improved infrastructure, urging the government to provide facilities that can support such competitions.
One of the standout performers was Preye Dede, who emerged among the top finishers despite competing with a spine injury.
“I feel very excited,” he said. “I wasn’t sure I could win, but after the swimming, I knew cycling would help me. I just pushed myself.”
He commended the organisers for creating a platform for athletes, noting that such events could help Nigeria produce competitors for global competitions like the Olympics.
Organisers said the triathlon is expected to become a regular event, with plans to host it quarterly.
They also expressed appreciation to sponsors for supporting the maiden edition.
For many participants, the race went beyond competition, offering an opportunity to test their limits, build connections, and embrace a healthier lifestyle.
