Peter Obi, Kwankwaso officially join NDC ahead of 2027 elections

Former governors of Anambra and Kano states, Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso have officially joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

National Leader of the NDC, Senator Seriake Dickson confirmed the development on his Facebook page, describing it as a significant step towards building a formidable political platform.

“Today, it was a pleasure and an honour to receive my brothers and respected political figures in Nigeria, Their Excellencies, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, CON, and Peter Obi, CON, into the NDC,” Dickson wrote.

“We warmly welcome them and trust that they will join us in building a formidable, ideologically driven party for generations to come — one that embodies the true spirit of selfless service to the people,” he added.

Before their formal reception into the NDC, the party had confirmed that high-level negotiations were ongoing with Obi and Kwankwaso over a possible move ahead of 2027.

Abdulmumin Abdulsalam, Deputy Publicity Secretary of the NDC, had said the talks were facilitated by Dickson, the party’s national leader.

He said engagements between the party and the two politicians had been ongoing for some time, amid shifting political dynamics and legal uncertainties.

He said the party is open to offering its presidential ticket to Obi and Kwankwaso as part of efforts to build a strong opposition front.

According to him, the groundwork for their entry had been laid, with further developments expected as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.

Obi contested for the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party while Kwankwaso contested under the New Nigeria Peoples Party.
