PDP chieftain commends Tinubu’s new allowance for civil servants

A former Ondo State governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party, Bosun Arebuwa, has commended President Bola Tinubu for approving a new allowance structure for civil servants.

He described the reviewed allowance structure as a timely relief for workers.

Arebuwa disclosed this in a statement issued through his media team on Tuesday, where he said the initiative would improve workers’ welfare and strengthen public service delivery.

“The approval of this new allowance structure is a welcome relief for Nigerian workers and a step in the right direction toward strengthening public service delivery,” he said.

He noted that improved remuneration for civil servants would boost their standard of living and stimulate economic growth.

“Better-paid workers will naturally spend more, invest more, and support local businesses. This will have a positive ripple effect across the economy,” he added.

The aspirant further linked poor wages to declining productivity in key sectors such as agriculture.

“When workers are not well paid, it affects productivity in agriculture and other key sectors. This eventually impacts food production and agro-based businesses,” he explained.

Arebuwa also urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts in other critical sectors, particularly security.

“No meaningful economic progress can be achieved without a secure environment where citizens feel safe and protected,” he said.

He commended the Nigerian military, police, and other security agencies for their service, extended condolences to families of fallen personnel, and called on Nigerians to remain united and support national development.

The PUNCH had on April 24, 2026, reported that the Federal Government had approved a revised allowance package for civil servants on Grade Levels 01 to 17, which is expected to take effect from October 1, 2026.

Details of the review were cont ained in a circular issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission and signed by its Chairman, Ekpo U.O. Nta.

Under the new structure, senior officers on Grade Levels 16 to 17 will receive ₦109,000 as duty tour allowance, while those on Grade Levels 01 to 04 will get ₦30,000. Kilometre allowances were also revised, with permanent secretaries earning ₦664 per kilometre and junior officers receiving ₦174.

For foreign trips, estacode allowances were increased, with permanent secretaries entitled to $1,040, while officers on Grade Levels 15 to 17 will receive $737. Workers on Grade Levels 01 to 06 are to get $357.

The policy also provides training support, with civil servants on long-term programmes receiving ₦150,000 for books and projects, while those on shorter courses will get ₦125,000. Daily local training allowances now range from ₦9,034.1 for junior staff to ₦33,877.5 for senior officers.

In the education sector, science and mathematics teachers on Grade Level 14 are expected to earn up to ₦480,000 annually, while laboratory attendants on the same level will receive ₦216,000. Resettlement allowances were pegged at 10 per cent of annual consolidated salary, while qualified government drivers will receive a yearly non-accident bonus of ₦150,000.

The government said the lead time before implementation would enable ministries, departments, and agencies to adjust their budgets and payroll systems.

However, the Nigeria Labour Congress expressed reservations, saying the increase does not adequately reflect current economic realities.

Its Acting General Secretary, Benson Upah, said, “The current adjustment still falls short of what Nigerian workers truly need to cope with today’s economic pressures.”
