Osimhen returns in Galatasaray cup defeat

Victor Osimhen made his return from injury as Galatasaray were knocked out of the Turkish Cup following a 2-0 quarter-final defeat to Genclerbirligi, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Nigerian striker, who had missed several weeks with an arm injury, was introduced late in the match but was unable to influence the outcome as the defending champions fell on home ground.

Osimhen had resumed full training in the build-up to the fixture and was expected to feature briefly as he worked his way back to full fitness, having missed four matches prior to the tie.

He eventually came on in the 78th minute, replacing Renato Nhaga, but Galatasaray were already trailing and struggling to break down their opponents.

The visitors took the lead early in the second half when Firatcan Uzum reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the box to score in the 51st minute.

Galatasaray pushed for an equaliser, with Ahmed Kutucu seeing a close-range effort saved and Wilfried Singo having a goal ruled out for offside.

Genclerbirligi then sealed the result in the 83rd minute, with Adama Traore converting from close range after a rebound to make it 2-0.

Despite several attacking substitutions by coach Okan Buruk, including the introduction of Osimhen, the hosts were unable to find a way back into the match, as the visitors held on to secure a place in the semi-finals.

The result ended Galatasaray’s strong run in the competition, having gone 10 matches unbeaten in the Turkish Cup prior to the defeat.

Attention will now turn to a crucial league fixture against Fenerbahce on Sunday, where Osimhen is expected to play a more prominent role as Galatasaray look to maintain their position in the title race.
