Ogun Methodist Church calls for tighter security measures, slams cybercrime

The Methodist Church Nigeria, Diocese of Remo in Ogun State, has commended Bola Tinubu and Governor Dapo Abiodun for their contributions to national development, while urging stronger measures to address insecurity and economic hardship.

The position was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the church’s 35th synod held at Ijoku Sagamu and signed by the Diocesan Bishop, Rev. Bamidele Ibikunle; Secretary, Revd. Jacob Ayedona; and Lay President, Dr. Akinola Soname.

The Synod, according to the communique made available to our Correspondent on Saturday was declared opened by Abiodun represented by Mr Ola Oresanya, the Commissioner for Environment and reportedly brought together 283 delegates, including 56 clergy and 227 Laity, along with a host of dignitaries from both the church and wider society.

Among church leaders present were The Most Rev. Adegbemi A. Adewale; Rt. Rev. S. A. Adegbite; Rt. Rev. Amos Ogunrinde; and Rt. Rev. Babatunde Ogunbanwo, among others.

The synod praised ongoing investments in infrastructure, peace-building, education, healthcare and religious tolerance, singling out the Gateway International Airport project inaugurated by Abiodun, which it said would significantly boost the state’s economy.

However, the church raised concerns over worsening insecurity and called on the Federal Government to act decisively.

“The Synod raised concerns over the rate of insecurity but emphasized kidnapping, banditry in some parts of the nation such as Plateau, Kwara, Kogi, Benue, and Borno States. There is urgent need for stronger measures against religiously motivated violence and kidnapping.”

It also urged the government to address economic challenges affecting citizens across the country.

“While commending ongoing development, it urged the Federal government to tackle economic hardship, inflation, and poverty, especially at the grassroots.”

The synod further called for increased investment in critical sectors and stronger partnerships.

“The Synod calls for increased investment in education and healthcare, especially in rural and underserved areas while also calling for enhanced collaboration between government and faith-based organizations to promote social welfare, justice, reconciliation, and peace.”

The synod also condemned cybercrime and called for youth engagement.

“The Synod condemned the activities of Yahoo boys and girls and counselled that they should be properly educated and be engaged in profitable ventures.”

Highlighting broader global concerns, the church commented on rising geopolitical tensions.

“The Synod is seriously disturbed about the current rift between USA and Iran which is affecting energy supply chain globally. There had been serious casualties reported including damages to public institution.

“It therefore calls for ceasefire to allow for peace talk. This will restore normally across the globe. The Synod advice world leaders not to play politics with sensitive issues that is capable of sending the entire modern world back into obscurity.”

It also advised Nigerians on health and economic resilience.

“Citizens were advised to prioritize their mental and physical health and reduce reliance on foreign medical care.

“Government was urged to provide better infrastructure, utilities, and financial support to retain businesses and stimulate economic growth.”

The communiqué concluded with prayers and a call for national focus.

“Finally, the Synod calls on the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR and the Vice President, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, GCON as they continue to manage the affairs of the nation and urges them to pay attention to economic reforms, security overhaul and national coherence.

“The Synod prays that God will grant them wisdom and renewed strength to take our nation to greater and enviable heights.”

The synod also encouraged Christians to remain steadfast in faith.

“The Synod urged the Church of God, the clergy and laity to continue to repose confidence in the Almighty God who alone can fight all battles and grant peace of mind through salvation in Christ Jesus.”
