NRFF begins grassroots rugby course in Ogun

The Nigeria Rugby Football Federation will kick-off their three-day coaching and medical course in Ogun State today, as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots development in the sport, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The programme, organised in partnership with the Ogun State Rugby Association, will run till Saturday, with sessions taking place at MITROS Residences and the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta.

The initiative is being led by the federation’s chief operating officer, Tunde Delu, who told our correspondent on Wednesday that the programme reflects a broader commitment to building rugby through structured grassroots development.

“We are committed to building rugby from the grassroots by equipping our coaches and medical personnel with the right knowledge and standards,” Delu told PUNCH Sports Extra.

He added that the objective goes beyond immediate training, stressing that the federation is focused on creating a long-term system that aligns with global standards.

“This course is not only about immediate development but also about creating a sustainable structure that aligns with global best practices and prepares Nigeria for future international opportunities,” he added.

The NRFF had announced on April 5 that the course will focus on key areas such as player safety, coaching techniques and athlete management, while also preparing participants for Level 1 and Level 1 certification pathways.

Delu further explained to PUNCH Sports Extra that the training would serve as a stepping stone for participants aiming to progress within the sport.

“It also serves as a pathway for coaches and medical personnel to advance towards Level 1 and Level 2 certifications, which are critical for the growth of the game in Nigeria,” he said.

He noted that the programme would also help develop a pool of educators ahead of expected initiatives by World Rugby later in the year.

“We are also looking at developing educators who will support upcoming programmes expected from World Rugby, ensuring that we have the capacity locally to sustain growth,” Delu added.

Participants are required to have completed introductory modules, including Rugby Ready and safeguarding, as well as basic coaching and medical courses, before taking part in the programme.
