Tobi Amusan will later on Tuesday evening kick off the 100m hurdles at the University of Ghana, located at Legon.
Heritage Times (HT) reports that the 27-year-old will be keen to successfully defend, for the second time, the title she first won in 2015.
Tobi’s Express Past
Amusan ran a new 12.68 Games record to successfully defend her 2015 titlte five years ago in Rabat and will be looking to become the first sprint hurdler, second Nigerian woman and third Nigerian in general to win an African Games track and field event three straight times.
This will be the third time Amusan will be gunning for a hat-trick of 100m hurdles titles in quick succession after she successfully defended her Nigerian Championship title last July in Benin City, Nigeria, and the Diamond League crown last September in Oregon, USA.
The reigning world 100m hurdles record holder has only failed to defend a title once and that was at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Other Compatriots
Amusan will have the complement of two other Nigerians, Stella Ayanleke and Faith Osamuyi competing in the 100m hurdles.
Before that, she successfully defended in 2022 the Commonwealth Games title she won in 2018, as well as the African Championships title she also first won in 2018.
Fresh Expectations
Ahead of the evening action, Amusan said, “We are here to represent Nigeria and we are going to give it our all to defend her honour.
“I am not going to say this or this person is going to win medals, but we are here to compete and I am ready to go.
“Like I always, say, the most important thing for me is to execute my race and get it done on the track.”
Apart from the 100m hurdles, the 4x100m women will be looking forward to defending their title won in Rabat, Morocco four years ago while the 4x100m men will be hoping to take the top prize after losing to Ghana at the last Games.
