The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Taraba State Command, has arrested a suspect in possession of 63 bags of cannabis sativa weighing 1,121.5 kilograms, equivalent to more than one metric tonne.
The suspect was reportedly arrested in Maihula town, Bali Local Government Area of the state, following a sting operation based on credible intelligence.
According to the agency, the 45-year-old suspect is currently in custody, while investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the consignment and identify other individuals or groups linked to the crime.
Speaking on the development, the Commander of the NDLEA in Taraba State, Javanson Kwalma, described the seizure as a major breakthrough in the agency’s efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse across the state.
“I am pleased to address you today on another significant breakthrough recorded by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Taraba State Command, in our ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse across the state,” he said.
“Acting on credible intelligence, operatives of the Taraba State Command on Saturday, June 13, 2026, carried out a successful operation at Maihula Town in Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State.
“During the operation, one suspect, Ali Adamu, a 45-year-old male, was arrested. A search conducted on his warehouse led to the recovery of sixty-three (63) jumbo bags of cannabis sativa weighing 1,121.5 kilograms (one metric tonne).
“The suspect is currently in NDLEA custody while investigations are ongoing to uncover the source of the consignment and identify other individuals connected to this criminal enterprise. Upon conclusion of investigations, the suspect will be prosecuted in accordance with the provisions of the law.”

Kwalma said the seizure represented a major success in the agency’s campaign against illicit drug trafficking.
“This seizure represents a major success in our determined campaign against illicit drug trafficking and demonstrates the commitment, vigilance and professionalism of the officers and men of the Taraba State Command.
“By intercepting this large quantity of cannabis, the Command has prevented a substantial amount of illicit drugs from reaching our communities and endangering the lives of our citizens, particularly young people,” he added.
The commander also expressed appreciation to the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (Rtd), OFR; Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas; security agencies, particularly the Department of State Services (DSS) and the 6 Brigade of the Nigerian Army; as well as members of the public for their support and timely intelligence.
“We encourage residents of Taraba State to remain vigilant and continue to partner with the Agency by providing useful information on drug-related activities within their communities,” he said.
The NDLEA reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks, reducing the availability of illicit substances and promoting a safer and healthier society.
