Nasarawa 2027: Wadada’s Campaign Crowd Photos Spark Controversy

Campaign photos of Nasarawa State governorship aspirant, Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada, have stirred controversy online amid allegations that artificial intelligence (AI) was used to exaggerate crowd size at a recent political event.

The disputed images, now widely circulated alongside what were believed to be the original versions, have triggered criticism from commentators and experts who warned that politicians may be resorting to digital manipulation ahead of the 2027 elections.

The development has ignited heated debate across political circles in Nasarawa State, with observers calling for transparency and authenticity as the race for the governorship ticket gathers momentum.

A youth political activist, Adnan Muktar, accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant of deploying artificial intelligence to inflate his perceived popularity.

Reacting via Facebook, Muktar criticised what he described as “digitally manipulated crowd images” linked to Wadada’s recent visit to Keffi LGA.

“This appears AI-generated just by looking at the picture. Wadada should make a genuine effort towards real mobilisation. He has fallen short with this so-called welcome home event, especially after Governor Sule publicly declared him as his preferred successor,” he wrote.

The controversy erupted after the photos surfaced online, purporting to show a massive turnout in support of Wadada in his hometown. However, netizens quickly questioned their authenticity, alleging the visuals were artificially generated to mislead the public and project inflated grassroots support.

In a strongly worded reaction, Muktar warned political actors against resorting to “deceptive digital tactics,” stressing that such actions undermine public trust and distort the democratic process.

Another social media commentator, Datti Assalafiy, also condemned the alleged manipulation, accusing politicians of using emerging technologies to mislead the public.

Juxtaposing the real and suspected altered images, he wrote in Hausa language, “This is how politicians would be deceiving the people and leaders to present fake popularity. I see no reason why anyone will fake popularity.”

Adding his an expert perspective, political scientist, Dr Ojoma David, warned that the use of artificial intelligence in political image manipulation amounts to “sophisticated rigging,” urging both voters and leaders to remain vigilant.
