who is Sky B?

In 2007, the Nigerian rap scene experienced a blend of diverse cultural influences. Rappers were not only emerging in Lagos but the city had become a significant hub for fostering and cultivating rap creativity. This period coincided with the rise of Nigerian Hip-Hop’s golden age, spanning from 2009 to 2010. While Hip-Hop had made its way to Lagos from the South-East, the South-South region was not yet a mainstream favorite, despite cities like Benin City in Edo State and Port Harcourt in Rivers State boasting vibrant Hip-Hop scenes. Over time, artists like Erigga, Yung Hans, and Timi Kei emerged from the South-South, followed by prominent figures such as Timaya and Duncan Mighty from Port Harcourt. Notable names like Burna Boy and Mr. 2Kay also joined this list.

Among these artists was Sky B, a young talent from Port Harcourt who gained popularity in the South-West. Unlike some of his peers, Sky B had a polarizing effect on audiences, perhaps due to his unique style that blended Pidgin English, Ebonics, and standard English. He capitalized on the trendy Hip-dance sound of the 2000s, which was popularized by groups like Trybesmen. Sky B’s breakthrough hit, ‘I’m Calling (My Bebe),’ featuring X.Blue, exemplified this sound. He continued to produce hits like ‘You Promised Not To Go,’ ‘Pray For Me,’ and ‘Here I Am,’ all featured on his 2007 album ‘Pray For Me,’ which reportedly sold around one million copies, despite facing piracy issues.

M-Trill, a fellow artist from Port Harcourt, acknowledged Sky B’s success and impact on the music scene, noting how his music resonated with the masses and influenced the industry’s distribution dynamics. Despite facing criticism for his unconventional approach, Sky B’s music found a dedicated audience and made a significant mark on Nigerian rap. His legacy reflects the idea that success in music is not solely defined by traditional notions of talent but by the ability to connect with audiences and create hits. Sky B’s brief but impactful reign showcased his resilience and creativity within the evolving music landscape of his time.

His album went platinum.
It has been reported severally that Sky B’s album “Pray 4 me” sold over a million copies. This is a hard thing to factcheck as music sales back then relied on CDs and not digital streaming platforms like Boomplay to sell. One of Sky B’s closest associates, a rapper named M-Trill had this to say about Sky B’s platinum status “I believe it sold more. I was touring then and his music was everywhere; motor parks, barbing salons, everywhere. I was happy for him and it motivated me a lot then. It made me see Nigeria’s target market different”
