Plans have been unveiled for a permanent memorial at the site of the tragic Humboldt Broncos crash, six years after the devastating incident that claimed the lives of 16 individuals and injured 13 others.
The memorial committee, consisting of members including Carol Brons, who lost her daughter Dayna in the accident, and representatives of the families of the Broncos team, has released a conceptual plan for the memorial site.
The project was initiated in 2019 and includes collaborations with various entities such as the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure, CN Rail, and SaskPower.
Carol Brons expressed relief at the progress made, acknowledging the challenging process due to pandemic-related setbacks and virtual interactions with stakeholders.
The first phase of the memorial project will involve site preparation, including earth-moving and the establishment of pathways and a seating area, with a subsequent phase focusing on the construction of a monument near the crash site adjacent to Tisdale.
The anticipated completion dates for the memorial are not yet determined, with further details on the second phase expected later in 2024.
Committee members, such as Kurt Leicht, are eager to commence the initial phase and are seeking local contributions in the form of financial donations or services to support the project’s development.
Journalist Laura Sciarpelletti reported on the memorial plans, highlighting the significance of the project for the Humboldt community and emphasizing the efforts to honor the memory of those affected by the tragedy.
